What is Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu?

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is a grappling/submission/self-defense martial art that primarily focuses on ground fighting. While other martial arts rely heavily on strength and speed, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu relies on superior technique and leverage.

How do I get started?

We offer new potential members one free introductory class! No sign up required. Just drop in!

How fit or strong do I need to be?

Many people have started "out of shape", but they got into better shape through regular training. Classes can be challenging, but you are welcome to start at your own pace and slowly build up to a full training session.

How do memberships work?

We do not require contracts. Our memberships are monthly only. Click “membership pricing” tab for more information and sign up.

What is a typical class like?

A typical class follows a similar structure: warm up, technique practice, live sparring.

Sparring is not mandatory. This is an opportunity to try out your techniques against an opponent at whatever intensity you choose.

Do I need previous martial arts experience?

Not at all.

Am I too old?

It’s never too late to start training BJJ. The program can be designed to cater to everyone’s needs.

Which classes are suitable for beginners?

While our Fundamentals class is catered specifically to novices, our All level Adults classes can accommodate beginners as well. Just come when it best suits your schedule.

What is the right age for kids to start Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu?

Every child is different. Our program caters for 5-14year olds and focuses on making self-defense and physical education fun. We use conditioning and skill-oriented games to engage and challenge kids. In addition to physical benefits, it will also teach your kids valuable life skills such as courtesy, confidence, focus, discipline, team work, mental strength, and self-control.

What do I need to bring?

All you need for your first class is comfortable clothing without any zippers. A fitted t-shirt or rash guard is ideal, and pocketless shorts are preferable. For women tights and a top is fine. However, if you have a Jiu-Jitsu Kimono or ‘Gi’ feel free to wear that. We have Gis available for purchase, but they are not necessary for the introductory classes.

Please clip your finger nails. A water bottle is also a good idea. Slippers/sandals make it easy to go off the mats.

Do I need any protective equipment?

Some students choose to wear a mouth guard when rolling. However, it’s entirely up to you.

What is the Gi?

A Gi (sometimes referred to as Kimono) is the uniform that is typically worn when training Jiu-Jitsu. It consists of 3 pieces: a jacket (or top), pants, and a belt.  Use of the Gi emphasizes the more technical aspect of grappling.

I have a Gi, but there are other club patches on them. Is this Ok?

This is no problem.

Do you welcome students from other academies?

We’re focused on community, not competition, so everyone is welcome at Nomad Jiu-Jitsu.

How often should I train?

This is really dependent on your lifestyle and your goals. You can train as little or as often as you like but to get the most benefit, we recommend a minimum of twice a week. We have membership options to suit everyone’s needs.

How long does it take to grade?

This varies from person to person.  Please note we do not charge for belt grading, and we do not perform testing for promotion.

Do I have to do competitions if I take Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu classes?

Absolutely not!!! You will not be pressured to compete unless it is your desire to do so. In general, students who compete make huge improvements in their BJJ and self-confidence.

Does your school have showers?

Yes, please bring your own toiletries and towel if you wish to shower.
